The Ministry of Employment, Labour and Social Security administers labour and social security regulations and policies, maintains cordial industrial relations among operatives in the labour market and ensures Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) in work places.
We work with our social partners; the Sierra Leone Labour Congress and the Sierra Leone Employers’ Federation; in fostering labour, employment and industrial relations.
As a key driver of employment and industrial relations, the ministry champions the presidential initiative for the creation of 500,000 jobs in the President’s current five-year mandate. To achieve this, we collaborate with other Ministries, Departments and Agencies, and donor partners like the World Bank, ILO and GIZ. Presently, the Ministry has formulated regulations to coordinate and supervise Overseas Recruitment Agencies to ensure decent work for Sierra Leonean migrant workers through smooth, orderly and safe labour migration processes.
Over the years, the ministry and its social partners have worked tirelessly to review existing labour laws, which resulted in six Labour Bills; amongst which three were enacted in 2023.
Going forward, we will implement policies and programmes on employment creation, workplace harmony, safety and health at work and an all-inclusive social security system to stimulate remunerative and productive employment, and promote dignity of employees and employers through decent work.
